2.26.... Brendan Mullen Recaptures the Egg
Brendan Mullin Recaptures the
Egg H72in W51in (H183cm W130cm) Dated 14-3-97 Price £2500 $3500 Acrylic on MDF From a photo in The Times and a photo by me of a clump of yellow crocuses in my garden. I used computer graphics in this painting for the first time to combine the image of the rugby footballers and the crocuses. It opened up a whole new world for me. The computer enabled me to juxtapose unlikely subjects in totally different scales. It enabled me to create a new perspective without distortion. It enabled me to modify the colours (I also add my own to create a strong chemistry. It forces one to think because there are interpretations at various levels of consciousness depending on how deeply you wish to probe. |

That is a mouthful so I
will explain. The charging footballers on their own were quite good subjects. But I needed
something more to express their utter desperation to achieve their respective goals. Freshly opened crocuses have a thrusting vigour and being so close to the ground are closely linked to it as if the ground itself has given birth to them and in the process revealed its true beauty, strength and power. The players charging out from between the stems gives a quite different meaning to their game. It is no longer a game but a suicidal bid to escape by Brendan Mullen. Now he has recaptured the pregnant Green Egg of destiny from the Crocus Guards. They who stole it from their deadly enemies are now in hot pursuit but the Green, more desperate than they to retain his offspring, escapes the last reckless diving tackle of the guard who will probably be condemned for fertiliser because of his failure to keep the egg secure. The threatening crocuses tower over the diminutive creatures who act out their respective roles oblivious of all else. |
