Die Where Fools Fear Not To Kill. H48in x W63in (H122cm W160cm) Dated 24-11-97 Price £4000 $5600 Acrylic on reinforced hardboard with integral frame From two P.A. News photos and some imagination. The scene is Kenya during the repressive riots against the rule of Daniel arap Moi. The Priest, Timothy Njoya, appalled at the carnage about him when people who were trying to express their disaffection with the regime were being beaten insensible or shot down like vermin, stood between them and the riot police. So they beat him up to the point when he feared for his life (he survived). Technical detail: The inspiration came from my disturbance and dismay at a photo of the priest and helpers by an Associated Press photographer which appeared in the The Times of July 8, 1997. The original photo had a pleasant grassy background but I needed some more atmosphere so used the police thugs from another photo of the political protests in Kenya, to emphasise the violence. That photo was also supplied by A.P. I combined them digitally. |
