The now classic roar of triumph and defiance seen when Pearce scored a penalty in a shoot-out against Spain in the quarter finals of the 1996 European Championship

There is something on the one hand pathetic yet on the other supremely unconquerable about the human spirit. We are so puny, so insignificant in the world and so infinitesimal in the Universe, yet our spirit is so big, so defiant. There are truly times when we feel as big as the universe as did Pearce when he scored this goal and proved to his supporters that he had the right temperament to succeed in the face of impossible pressure. The tiny Pearce yelling defiance and triumph from the centre of the poppy, encapsulates this spirit for me. The fiery scarlet of the poppy expresses his intense emotion and amplifies it into infinity
