The trouble with realism is it limits your unfettered use of colour. This has been brought home to me during the painting of "A Good Deal Done"

Margaret my daughter had taken a very atmospheric snapshot of a friend smoking a cigarette. When I saw it I had to paint my impression of it so I stuck it up in my studio and kept coming back to it and staring at it until I knew what Iwanted to say. The result was what I wanted.

This is a new departure for me and also when I had finished it reminded me of the technique I was using when I reached the end of my London period. I will be doing a lot more work like this.
