Acrylic on plywood

From 3 old black and white photos. For the main outline I used a Photo taken at my sister's wedding in about 1958.

I wanted to try to recreate my Father in colour, realistic colour. He died at 60 from heart trouble. I never got to know him as an adult. We were oil and water when I was a teenager and then I left for the U.K. before I could make a friend of him. This portrait demanded a realistic rendering.

My mother did not know quite what to make of it. It was too close to her, but it stirred up emotions in her so I have to assume that I had recreated something of the real Leslie that she spent close on 30 very full years with. She said that he was more debonair than I portrayed. I am glad that she has such a good and lasting image of him in her mind. I did not know how to make him look more debonair so I had to rest my case.
